5 Mistakes To Avoid When Writing An Informative Essay

There are certain requirements for informative essays concerning both the structure and the content. Frequently they are disregarded by the students. This carelessness often results in poor quality of a paper and low grades. To write an excellent informative essay consider the following widespread mistakes and don’t repeat them in your paper:

  1. Weak thesis.
  2. Sometimes students omit the thesis statement at all or don’t pay much attention to it. Remember that you have to arouse interest in your reader from the first sentences. Moreover, your thesis should be catchy and state clearly what problem you’re going to explain or what new information the readers will get to know.

  3. Poor structure.
  4. Informative essays are usually organized into five paragraphs: an introductory paragraph, the body paragraphs (three as a rule), and a conclusion. Introduce your reader to the subject in the first sentences, scrutinize key points in the body paragraphs, and summarize your ideas in the conclusion.

  5. Lack of enthusiasm.
  6. If you’re keen on a certain topic you’ll easily cope with the writing. Unfortunately, in most cases you’ll be assigned a concrete theme. Read the prompts carefully, there should be at least one interesting question that might intrigue you. It’s true that sometimes you have to force yourself to write on the topics you don’t like. Overcome your unwillingness for the sake of the readers. There shouldn’t be a single trace of disinterest because the way how you feel about your essay directly affects its quality.

  7. Neglecting the outline.
  8. If you don’t want to get stuck in the middle of the writing process or find yourself wandering away from the subject, then write an outline prior to actual writing. Jot down major points you’re going to discuss, draft the topic sentences for each paragraph, and find supporting details and evidence for each key idea. Each paragraph should be dedicated to one particular subtopic. For example, if you’re writing about a step-by-step process, describe different steps in different paragraphs.

  9. Forgetting about the aim of this kind of essay.
  10. You’re not supposed to give your opinion or persuade the readers in something. Your task is to educate or inform the audience about a certain subject. You have to stay objective and give unbiased facts for both sides of a problem without taking sides. The readers want to get exhaustive information and draw their own conclusions.

Always make sure that you present your ideas in a clear and concise manner, give enough details, and provide the reader with interesting and useful information.
